Gravel bags vs bulk: compare the complete quote

Count whole bags, apply supplier increments, and compare delivered totals using the same required material quantity.

Is it cheaper to buy gravel in bags or bulk?

Neither bags nor bulk are always cheaper. Compare the delivered price of the quantity you can actually buy. Bags round up to whole bags. Bulk follows the supplier’s stated increment and minimum. A low unit price can be outweighed by delivery or excess material.

Use the same order volume

Suppose your measured volume is 2.4691358 yd³ and your chosen extra is 5%. Your order estimate is 2.5925926 yd³, or 70 ft³. The following prices are hypothetical arithmetic inputs, not current market rates.

Option Purchase calculation Delivered cost before tax
Bulk at 50 per yd³, half-yard increments 3 yd³ × 50 + 60 delivery 210
Bags yielding 0.5 ft³ at 5 each 140 bags × 5, free collection 700

If the bulk supplier instead sells exact volume with no minimum, the cost changes to approximately 189.63 including that delivery. Neither quoting convention should be assumed.

How many bags of gravel do I need?

For bags labelled by volume, divide your order volume by the bag yield and round up to a whole bag. For bags labelled by mass, divide your density-based order mass by the bag mass and round up. Keep both values in matching units.

A 40 kg bag is not a 40 L bag. For an order mass of 1,000 kg, a 40 kg bag needs 25 bags. For an order volume of 1 m³, a 40 L bag also happens to need 25 bags, but these are different calculations and do not describe the same material quantity unless density makes them equivalent.

Some product labels state a yield. The cited Sakrete sheet lists approximately 0.6 ft³ for its 60 lb product. Enter the yield of the actual bag you will buy rather than transferring that figure to a different product or package size.

Include the practical charges

Ask about delivery area, minimum load, access, unloading arrangements, and any tax or fixed fees. Enter only charges from your quote. If several materials share one delivery, check how the supplier allocates it: this worksheet charges delivery once per layer quote and does not silently consolidate shipments.

Try both quotes in the buying comparison, print the line items, and confirm them with the supplier before placing an order.
